Scott Harrower Mosaic Design School is at the leading edge of mosaic education in Australia, changing attitudes and affecting traditional and contemporary styles of mosaic expression.

 

The School is based in Australia’s creative regional capital on the far north coast of New South Wales.

 

The studio is nestled in parkland rainforest gardens,amidst hill-top acres high in the mountains behind Byron Bay. You will leave the bustle of the busy world behind you and experience the dramatic landscape of World Heritage-Listed Nightcap National Park. A stones throw away from the studio.  Students are immersed in a creative, comfortable and unique learning experience as they practice one of the world’s oldest medium. Students are exposed to the studio's professional practice and site-specific works being made.

Classes are kept to small dynamic groups, designed for an enriched exchange of information and interpersonal experiences. We offer a range of learning opportunities from Beginners to Master Classes. We teach the Direct, Indirect, Double-direct and few of our own methods of production, in a professional well equipped studio. Our in-studio supply store stocks all your necessary material requirements from leading suppliers. Our café kitchen serves fresh espresso coffee and treats.

 

Scott Harrower’s zest and passion for teaching has been experienced by private students, communities and school groups around Australia. He has toured by request with the Queensland Arts Council and facilitated creative-arts workshops at Charles Sturt University, University of South East Queensland and Central Queensland University. As the National Education Officer for the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand, Scott Harrower initiated a Mentorship Program to foster professional development opportunities for emerging practitioners. He learnt Byzantine reproduction techniques in Ravenna, Italy.

WHAT'S ON

 

MOSAIC BEGINNERS START UP

This course is a great place to start. We are now presenting this course as  a 2 day intensive weekend Workshop. ENROLL NOW 

After receiving your enrollment an info pack will be forwarded to you with further information detailing the course.

 

You will learn the essential mosaic design principles of Andamento and its cause-effect on laying styles and techniques. As a student you will to gain a creative underpinning for the direct and in-direct techniques of mosaic making. This course will enable students to develop the necessary skills to continue a variety of on-going mosaic projects. Hands-on instructions for applying colour, light and tone to create visual texture, will  assist students in creating a contemporary or classical inspired mosaic. Learn how to cut and shape glass mosaic tesserae and ceramic tiles into a variety of shapes. Adhesive and grouting  techniques are taught through hands on demonstration. A beginner project idea is provided and designed to assist your learning.

 

NEXT START WEEKEND March- 17 & 18, May 12 & 13, July 21 &22.  All dates are for 2012

INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED STUDENTS MOSAIC COURSES

Students  from our  weekend beginner workshops are able continue to attend classes on a weekly, monthly or by a 10 week term enrollment. A progression of project based learning is established to suit the individual student's learning. Please discuss your learning requirements with Scott.

 

NEXT  WEEKEND  WORKSHOP

A Roman approach with Marble.  March 10 & 11, 2012

This workshop fosters an historic approach to modern principles and new ways of seeing hard stone.
Participants learn to replicate an ancient mosaic into their own classical time piece while understanding the way of working in Roman and Byzantine times. Construct a face, and animal or bird and a favourite vegetal mosaic from antiquity! A choice of Cartoons are provided to assist with  a framework of Andamento while understanding structure and form and how to apply tonal value and colour to create realistic or abstract expression.  If you are keen to try a Hammer and Hardie, then this is the ideal workshop for exploring this ancient tool.
